symptoms and what they mean
We have all suffered from some symptoms and diseases, which have always led us to believe the worst-case scenario in what we might face. As a part of my awareness on oral hygiene, I have created this page, highlighting the most common symptoms and informing you whether or not they require a visit to the dentist.
dental cavities
Dental cavities are considered one of the most harmful yet common symptoms that humans face yet often disregard. According to the World Health Organization, 2.5 billion people suffer from untreated dental caries. A dental cary or a cavity is a sign of tooth decay; this means that a part of your body, the tooth, is exposed to decomposing. This has various affects on the rest of the body; if cavities are left unattended for too long, it weakens the immune system and can even cause heart failure or heart diseases.

Periodontal disease
Periodontal disease is a disease that mainly affects your gums health. It is usually spotted when patients find symptoms of swelling and inflammation, or in worse cases, bleeding within their gums. This disease is the main source of tooth loss, especially if not treated in its early stages. The reason this disease happens within humans is due to the buildup of dental plaque as a result of poor hygiene or sometimes genetics affecting immunity.
Mouth ulcers
Mouth ulcers act as a sort of blister usually found on the inner lip, tongue, or roof of the mouth. Out of the following, they are the only symptom that does not require immediate cause of concern; they are very common and are usually due to braces or drinking hot drinks, meaning they are unpreventable; however, they should only last a small period of time; if they last for a period longer than 3 weeks, then it is a sign to get in contact with a specialist.

Oral cancer
Oral cancer is considered one of the more serious diseases that can develop within the mouth; according to the World Health Organization, oral cancer has caused over 170,000 deaths globally in 2020. Main symptoms that one should look out for are mouth ulcers that don’t heal within the 3-week time limit, numbness in the mouth, blocked throat, and a lumpy pattern in the mouth. With alarming diseases like this, early detection is important. If you or anyone you know is experiencing these symptoms, it is better to go check with a healthcare specialist as early as possible.
